After three critically acclaimed solo albums over the last decade, Jesse Malin’s latest album releases to the US following the UK release earlier this year now with four additional tracks including “Fairytale of New York” (The Pogues), “It’s Not Enough” (Johnny Thunders), “Lady From Baltimore” (Tim Hardin), and a new version of The Hold Steady track, “You Can Make Them Love You.”
A labor of love, “On Your Sleeve” bears it’s title as plainly as Jesse Malin bears his heart on this album, and transparently enough, pays reverent respects to the inspiring musical ghosts of a beloved past. Reminding anyone who came of age in the punk era of those long hours spent ear to the speaker or gazing, belly-up at the ceiling in headphones, Malin offers up to maturing rockers an album of indie favorites, paying respects to a prolific generation of punk progenitors and veteran composers. The release features interpretations of classic singer-songwriters like Neil Young, Paul Simon and Tim Hardin, along with contemporary greats like The Hold Steady, punk icons The Ramones, Bad Brains and Lou Reed.
After stints in the 1980s and `90s with hardcore bands and the glam-punk revival act D Generation, Jesse Malin found his true calling in the 2000s with a series of genre-bending solo efforts that found an urban toughness in roots-rock. Garnering critical accolades and the high-profile endorsements of both Ryan Adams and Lucinda Williams, the native New Yorker fused the catchy grit of Tom Petty, the vulnerability of Neil Young, and the street romanticism of Bruce Springsteen in one undeniably accomplished body of work.
“On Your Sleeve is the blossoming” of an idea that has been gnawing at Jesse for a few years, and one that sees him paying back “all those songs that hit me at certain points in my life and never stopped.”
